You can use a pre-sliced package of coleslalw if you perefer. I find that the cabbage is too thin and gets mushy quick, so watch the cooking time closely.

FAQs

Can you cook ground beef and veggies in same pan? ›

This quick and easy Vegetable and Ground Beef Skillet is one of those easy recipes I make over and over without getting tired of it. Remarkably versatile, you can incorporate any vegetables you love as well as almost all protein sources.

What is the secret to cooking ground beef? ›

Break meat into smaller pieces, season, and brown.

Break the ground beef into smaller and smaller pieces with your spatula. Sprinkle with salt and any spices you are using. Do not stir continuously, instead let it cook for a minute between each stir to let the moisture evaporate and allow the meat to brown.

How to make hamburger meat in a pan? ›

Heat the olive oil in a pan over. Add the beef and cook until it starts to brown on the bottom. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to break up the beef while stirring occasionally, being careful not to overmix the meat. Cook until there is no more pink and browned all over.

Do you saute veggies or ground beef first? ›

Cook the meat first to get that caramelization, then take it out and add in your veggies. The veggies will absorb all of the meaty flavors and scrape up all the delicious bits it left behind. In the end, you'll get caramelized, flavorful meat and tender, not mushy veggies.

Do you put anything in the pan when cooking ground beef? ›

Ground beef is an affordable and versatile protein that's also incredibly family-friendly. It can be used in chili, tacos, sloppy joes, lasagna and beyond! Cooking it is fairly straight-forward. All you need is a skillet, a bit of oil and salt to turn ground beef into browned, juicy crumbles to use in dinner recipes.

What does adding vinegar to ground beef do? ›

Acidic ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, yogurt and wine weaken collagen and protein in meat. Once the proteins are broken by acid, one loose protein can bond with another and trap liquid in the meat, making it juicy and tender.

Why add baking soda to ground beef before cooking? ›

However, by gently tossing a baking soda solution with the meat (about ¾ teaspoon baking soda to 2 tablespoons water for 2lbs of grind) and letting sit for 15 to 20 minutes before cooking, beef loses less liquid, browns faster and tastes better.

Why do you put baking soda in ground beef? ›

How it Works. According to America's Test Kitchen, mixing raw ground beef with a little baking soda changes its pH, which in turn makes it harder for its proteins to form a bond as the meat cooks. Without the help of baking soda, proteins in meat are attracted to one another and squeeze out juices as the meat cooks.

What is York cabbage? ›

York cabbage is a name for a type of cabbage, not a variety. It has pointed heads rather than rounded ones. Varieties include 'April' for spring and 'Greyhound' for summer and autumn. Most garden centres and seed catalogues have these or similar.

Can you cook raw meat and cooked meat in the same pan? ›

When you cook raw meat in the same pan as cooked meat, there is a risk of cross-contamination, which can lead to foodborne illness. Cooked meat has already been heated to a temperature that kills harmful bacteria, while raw meat may contain harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella.

Can you use the same pan to cook different meats? ›

Can you cook chicken and beef in the same pan? On the same grill or cooktop, yes. In the same pan, probably not if you expect any decent results. The pan by design allows cross-sharing of flavors and the two proteins are too dissimilar for that to work well.

Can you cook raw meat and cooked meat together? ›

Cooking can kill most food poisoning organisms – it is important not to spread the organisms from the raw food back to the cooked food. Keeping raw and cooked food separate stops the bacteria from raw food re-contaminating cooked food.

Should vegetables be cooked separately? ›

Roast vegetables individually: First, and easiest, you can roast the individual vegetables on separate trays and combine them after roasting. This lets you monitor how quickly each vegetable is cooking and pull each vegetable from the oven as it's done.
