Is this the refurbed one that Steve from GN sent to Asus for warranty work? I'd pay this price if Steve's hair is caught in the case, making it a tech holy artifact.
Siuto on 03/06/2024 - 12:34
Note that the Ally X has been announced. Whether it's worth the upgrade is one thing but the price of the Ally should drop.
ichigodan on 03/06/2024 - 12:35
You could buy two of these. Same APU. Bigger battery maybe the main draw.
Siuto on 03/06/2024 - 12:39
More ram and bigger SSD I think. One would also hope the issues with the original Ally would be resolved in the X, such as the SD card reader, but then again they should have resolved the issue on the Ally itself rather than to fix it in a new model.

Not worth an extra $800 for the new one. The RRP of the X is bs.

From reddit it sounds like the warranty on these is worthless because ASUS refuses to fix anything. E.g. people reporting their SD card slots break after a few months and ASUS gives them the run-around. I guess that's the risk with buying one of these

I had my Australian Ally fixed under warranty (microSD failure). I got it back within 2 weeks. No upsell but some convoluted emails.
YMMV.

How's the SD card been so far since you got it back from warranty?
DASHCAM NOW DUDE on 03/06/2024 - 14:53
My microSD card is still accessible but I run games exclusively from the SSD.
It's basically a dust cover…
cnu*t on 03/06/2024 - 15:29
They fixed mine in under a week. Asus Australia seems to be better.
witheredcouch on 04/06/2024 - 13:51
I have no experience with Asus Australia, but I would preface this with it is based on Asus USA, and that the reputation in other countries could differ.

Good luck with refurbished ROG Ally lol, they even refused to fix new ones

Do yourself a favour and just get the Steam Deck OLED instead.

How is that doing you a favour? Deck can't run aaa for shizz
Ruddaga on 04/06/2024 - 09:50
Except it actually can? And I say this as someone with a 4090/14900K desktop.
Running Ghost of Tsuhima at 60fps medium/high detail looks incredible on the deck.
FujinShu on 04/06/2024 - 13:55
Or just get this or any other handheld that is sold in Australia by the manufacturer and not grey-imported.
Gabe needs to stop getting butthurt over his ACCC loss and release the damned Steam Decks here.Ruddaga on 04/06/2024 - 19:55
This as well.
But ignoring that, slapped a 2tb hard drive in it, and I'm happy with mine
ChickenAdobo on 03/06/2024 - 13:02
I’m guessing these suffered the dreadful sd card reader problem. Better off with the newer Ally X if you need a portable pc handheld
Jklaro on 06/06/2024 - 09:02
That $800 more then this. I rather buy this for 800 and buy 2tb storage and not worry about sd slot.

New Lenovo Legion Go Z1 Extreme is $909 with cashback https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/849127#, also Lenovo likely has better support than Asus (had decent experience getting replacement charging adapter for my Legion laptop)

30% only if you have a Westpac card though, still $20% cashback ($959.20) is still a great deal.
witheredcouch on 03/06/2024 - 16:08
If you can deal with the size, a good buy. For me the ROG is basically I think the absolute max I could go (even then it is bigger than i'd like).
